Description & Characteristics

Perfluorodecalin, C10F18, is a fully-fluorinated, odourless, colourless, non-volatile liquid containing a mixture of cis and trans isomers and has the following characteristics:

  • Non-toxic1 – LD50 > 2000mg/kg (Rat)
  • Sterilizable
  • Non-flammability
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Thermally stable to >400oC
  • High solubility for gases e.g. oxygen, carbon dioxide.

  • Applications

    Perfluorodecalin finds many applications in the medical field e.g. Eye Surgery, Liquid Breathing, Organ Storage and Wound Treatment. It is also used extensively in the cosmetics industry for its oxygen carrying capacity.

    Safety, Handling and Storage

    Although HP Perfluorodecalin is considered biologically and chemically inert, good laboratory practice should be observed when handling. HP Perfluorodecalin has an indefinite shelf life if properly stored in its original sealed container. Safety data sheets are available on request.
